This proposal makes me scared for my bet on going full with NixOS.

To me it seems like a really complicated technical solution to a social problem(the monorepo approach doesn't scale).

If more people are needed to maintain the nixpkgs repo why instead not focus on ways to increase the community size.

Missing docs have been a problem for NixOS for a long time, most awesome features are lost on some proficient users tweets. Having better docs would do wonders for the community.

I think if NixOS wants to copy some of Rust strengths, quality docs should be its first priority.

Citation needed.

That's mentioned by edolstra in a comment on the proposal.

I know who the author of that comment is, but it is not a universally held opinion among Nix users.

It's still an stupid mistake MS made that could be once back. That's enough for me for staying away from the MS tax for life.

Just be happy for industrial competitiveness and stfu dude.

Honestly, I've been noticing this trend of bashing the newcomers or defending the monopolists more and more here on HN.

It doesn't really feel more like a startup/hacker news.

Just trying to promote awareness here.

Web centric didn't work for FirefoxOS.

Contrary to popular trends, programmers can know more than a couple of languages and not everything has to be javascript.

I'm sure many hackers would be more excited to make an app with go, rust, haskell, etc than to do js, that just feels like work.

Yes, FirefoxOS was certainly web centric and mostly did not succeed. That doesn’t mean it failed /because/ it was web centric. Every mobile OS has struggled other than iOS and Android because getting adoption for a new OS is hard.

Some additional thoughts:

1) maybe shipping a new OS with hardware, catering to a privacy focused niche is key to succeed this time

2) maybe web technology wasn’t ready to have wide adoption for making cross-platform apps at the time FirefoxOS was launched, but is now

3) maybe PureOS will fail regardless of how apps are built. In my opinion, the best chance of succeeding will be from actually being useful. In order to be useful, it needs software. Unless, of course, you seriously believe that getting hackers excited by not using web technology will be a better solution.

The hacker news guidelines explicitly mention avoiding calling names like idiotic/idiots.

@dang: does this merit a flag or ban?

I think toxic fanatism make hn a worse place for discussion.

Stop posting articles with over the top language from obvious competitors calling a competitors feature a “trick”.

Talk about over the top language - “toxic fanaticism”? Really? The name calling of other posters you disagree with makes hn worse (my comments focused on a company not this community)

What's the problem with Google having a competitor, why are you so hyped about?(This is why I think you're a fanatic)

Also, why are you so eagerly defending the big guy/monopolist in the room. Is this the attitude of an entrepreneur or hacker? One that is part of the "hacker news" community?

Apaec - can I encourage you to focus on the post / article and make comments about that rather than attacking other posters?

If you think this feature (which you don’t need to use) is a “trick” that has no value that is fine - explain why no one should use it - give some examples etc

Stop with the whole focus on other posters motivations, calling them “toxic fanatics” etc.

Google has lots of competitors - the big one is exchange / outlook - which has a confidential email mode. For a list of competitors look here:

https://www.datanyze.com/market-share/email-hosting

It’s not unreasonable for them to add a feature to better compete with MS. I didn’t even see Protonmail on that pie chart

@dang - I'm sorry I'm unsure of how this @ mention banning process works. Please do review apaec approach before following their request for a ban.

For example

"I guess it can't be proved that this guy is a shill for AWS. But this kind of toxic fanatism(yet trying to sound logical) is just harmful for the HN community.

dang: Can this kind of behavior be punished?"

as an earlier comment around something to do with AWS. Why does someone "trying to sound logical" mean they are a "shill" or a "toxic fanatic"?

In this thread I'm called a "toxic fanatic" and there is a claim about my support for monopolies and my lack of desire for competition (all of which is totally untrue in actual fact) with no substance regarding the value (or not) of the privacy / confidentiality feature google introduced. I'm also threatened with a ban.

I much prefer jq[1]. Actively developed and written in C.

Articles always miss that Bill Gates takeoff with DOS was thanks to his mother having ties with IBM CEO John Opel.

So that example has nothing to do with meritocracy.

A discussion about Mapillary vs OSC https://github.com/openstreetcam/openstreetcam.org/issues/60

I'll go for OSC for future projects. Thanks for sharing.

NixOS offers the same benefits(more actually). Without containers.
