Just to give a idea of how the salary structure works here. Suppose you are earning 50,000 per month, only 11,000 will be your basic, some 5000 will be your house rent. and another 5000 for some expenses and additional perks can be up to some 30000. So, they will earn only 11,000 pm instead of the 50,000. which won't even be sufficient to pay rent.

Just elaborating. The 'basic pay' part of the salary paid by tech companies in India is usually very less. (And it isn't due to sinister motives but rather to maximize the non-taxable chunk in salary).

This 'basic pay' will usually be 1/5 or 1/7 of monthly net/gross pay. So, for an average worker (say 3+ yrs) in IBM India, the monthly gross would be around INR60K => severance would be around INR20K, which is really a paltry sum.

Is this true? I am from India and want to do a PhD in US. I thought the work opportunities of PhD gards is good.

It is very variable depending on your subject and research focus.

Teaching opportunities are not good; there are far too many PhDs awarded compared to job openings for university positions.

It may be a benefit for private industry work, but remember that a PhD is primarily about showing you can perform rigorous scientific research, and compared to a Masters, matters less (or not at all) in jobs where research is not the focus.

Read about "post doctoral treadmill" and adjunct gigs, which are like second tier faculty. If you get a phd in some programming related field, like compilers, programming languages, networking, yes, you can work for some valley firms. Yes, you can get green card easy, too. But there is no 'secure' employment like the phd grads of 1970s

I am also in India and I have to say that while Lumias are not everywhere, they definitely have a decent market share. and iPhone country? I don't think so.

In his autobiography, Stephen Fry mentions about Douglas Adams in a chapter. He mentions how they stayed close to each other and whenever he was free, he used to go to Adams house and "play"(in his own words) with Adams' mac. He wrote that they were the only two people who he knew had macs. He also mentioned that unlike regular users, they hacked away at their macs. They used download some small programs and tried running them till their computers crashed. He also writes about his disdain towards the ibm machines of that time. His autoBio is a wonderful read and he talks about his love for tech a lot.

People on Mac OSX. one thing sorely miss from my windows days.

I wanted to use use evernote to collect information for an app I wanted to make. I can not comment on their iOS and Android app but their windows phone app definitely needs a lot of improvement. No matter how many syncs i do on both my mac and windows phone, the notes entered in the respective devices won't sync. I really wish MS releases their One-note for Mac. The way their one-note app on WP and windows 8 syncs is amazing.

I am a recent mac convert and and the CMD + tab + Option is nothing but frustratingly finger bending. I really wish there is some way to bring the minimized windows to their maximized state when I command tab them.
