So they steal from you, and then you get the privilege of your tax dollars paying for their room and board. I dunno, I can see why some people might not be chuffed to bits by that solution.
Describing prison as "free room and board" is absurd. People are not going there by choice. They are there because we as a society say they should be there, and we pay for that as a society. Every attempt to not do that (e.g. by charging people for the cost they impose on the judicial system) has turned out to be an exploitative nightmare. Are you also upset that people steal and therefore your tax dollars need to go towards policing?
I didn't say "free room and board" – you did. You also said that going to prison isn't a choice, but also that I can choose to go to prison whenever I want, so which is it?
Someone in a sister thread suggested sharia law and chopping off hands, so clearly there are other alternatives besides "society pays for prison" and "the criminal pays for prison".
And yes, I am upset that people steal and that this causes more of my tax dollars to go to heightened policing. Why wouldn't I be? Presumably the only people that are not upset about that are criminals and potentially the police.
I think you’re operating under the assumption that all people should live in big cities.
I think it’s fine if cities get too expensive; people just need to wake up to the idea of “this place is too expensive for me”.
There are lots of very affordable houses in the Midwest, but everyone seems to want to be a star in Hollywood or a financier in New York (no matter how delusional they are).
Tbh it’s a fair question, but we haven’t seen a rapid escalation of incidents in planes from those manufacturers. So I’d venture the guess “not as bad as Boeing”
How do they plan to monetize it? How many people will pay for Search? Will they have an ad-supported version? If so how would their direction be any different when they face the same problems?
In the early days a user could go into their setting, see the cost per search, and the total cost of their use per month, compared to what they paid. I threw some extra money their way when I was my use exceeded what I paid. But that was before they changed up their pricing structure.
Yahoo is managing web properties and is essentially a media company (is paid by advertisers or other customers to deliver a well-characterized audience).
It not wrong though. A lot of right wing ideology requires being okay with cognitive dissonance from compartmentalizing opposing views meant for different scenarios. It’s a legitimate point.
In the USA. There are more countries in the world, not sure why a bot should have a left leaning slant just because the American right is stupid. I get it could get that since it is trained on the English web, but there is no reason it has to be left leaning.
The current presidential candidate and his party said that at their get together. I don’t think there’s even a far left equivalent when it comes to candidates or parties.
Can I guess if you're a) in your lower 20s or lower, or b) steadily employed with at least a few months of savings and have never been abjectly poor or injured?
> A lot of right wing ideology requires being okay with cognitive dissonance from compartmentalizing opposing views meant for different scenarios
You're not wrong exactly, but you just described human nature. All of our brains work that way by default. It's much harder to see for your own side, of course.
I mean lot of left wing people are the same double thinkers - How would you explain that somebody can be deeply concerned about what Israel does in Palestine, but also cheering up for Russia?
How come that LGBTQ people are concerned about their rights and then support most intolerant Islamist regimes, who would slaughter them on spot?
It's wild to me that tech workers will still downvote stuff like this after the season of layoffs we just had. Google is "trimming the fat" while making 18 billion a quarter. To what end? How about preserving the middle class and ending the monopoly power of these firms?
