Author here. You're absolutely right about Canada ;)

Author here. Your thinking is equally weird to me. I value my time for sure, but isn't there a cost in not persuing what I'm genuinely curious about? What if a successful startup had come out of it?

By the way, this took place in 2011-2012, when Google Flights didn't exist.

Author here. This story took place in 2011-2012, but I wrote this post in April 2021.

I'm the author of the post. I can confirm that I 100% enjoyed it.

I usually view such things as work, but thank you for giving me another perspective. Maybe next time I'll make it an enjoyable game.

Thanks for your comment - author here.

You're absolutely right - the good old trial and error applies when it comes to innovation. There's just no way someone could come up with a breakthrough technology or product on their very first try. You absolutely need to be relentless at trying and testing out new things.

And yes, diversity of thought isn't nearly as valued as it should be these days. A team of people who all think the same about everything probably won't innovate as much as a team whose members can think for themselves. Just think about the early Paypal days (Peter Thiel, Max Levchin, Elon Musk, etc.)!

There's already a client-side implementation of Python in JavaScript. See: https://brython.info/

But it might not give you the sort of compatibility between the client and server code that you're looking for.

Everybody here is talking about PSP 5.0+.

But for me, the best version ever was 3.0. I was able to draw pretty impressive diagrams at the pixel level, without any problem.

In subsequent versions, they modified the zoom tool, the GUI and the brushes, so it was quite harder to do the same thing.

I stopped upgrading at version 4.14, in 1997. I think version 5 added layers and some other complexities that I just didn't care to deal with.

Eventually, I added Gimp to my "arsenal" for occasional complex work, but that 20 year old Paintshop Pro is still my daily driver for quick graphics stuff. Runs fine on Windows 10.

Amazing piece of software and Minnesota!

Version 5 was also the first one that forced you to pay after the trial period was over. Did that have anything to do with your decision?

No, I was using a paid for version.

I just noticed you can buy a brand-new copy of Paintshop Pro for $48 (cheap!) at https://www.paintshoppro.com/en/products/paintshop-pro/stand... I'm thinking about it.

It occasionally goes on sale for even cheaper. Plus you can find it bundled for free sometimes, e.g. with a Panasonic camera lens: https://www.adorama.com/ipc2517mnk.html

I'm currently experimenting with CodeMirror for one of my projects, and it shows that you spent a lot of time to refine its design and API. You did an awesome job, seriously.

I haven't tried ProseMirror yet, but I'm pretty sure that the same level of quality is there.

Thanks for your work!

Public speaking isn't a skill. It's a habit.

The more you practice it, the more comfortable, the more structured and the more natural you become.

I've been in Toastmasters for almost 7 years now. And it seriously changed me for the better.

Agreed, former Speech and Debate participant for several years. Did not place well. Consistently last actually. Was extremely useful in learning to care less and less about being in front of people and the center of attention. Still get massive guitar playing stage fright though.

Did speaking often not make it easier for you? You agree with the comment, but your experience says otherwise. Curious.

Big respect for Google!

Creating that site is a really cool move, and it will encourage other people to do the same.

I especially like the fact that they'll mount sensors for air quality on Street View cars. And the fact that they're using almost 100% renewable energy.

This is what I call leading by example.

There was a really good article on Ars about using this to detect natural gas leaks just a couple weeks ago:

https://arstechnica.com/science/2017/04/natural-gas-is-leaki...

Lots of companies have been publishing sustainability reports for years now (our first was published in 2010) -- it's not unique to Google. We're on track to hit 100% renewable by 2025. Here's our site: https://www.bloomberg.com/bcause/planet/
