All the more reason to oppose regulation like this, since if it were in place the US would fall behind other countries without such regulation.

A few years ago I discovered that I had spent my entire life tying my shoes incorrectly, with a Granny Knot instead of the stable Square Knot (the knots are very similar). My shoes would always come untied and I frequently double knotted them. Now a single knot is always sufficient.

This! I've never had a good explanation, but being left handed I was making a granny knot about 80% of the time. I never figured it out consciously, but it eventually nearly stopped. Just the rare one.

Now I understand!

Huh. Not only have I been tying my shoes incorrectly for decades, I've taught my children to do the same.

Patch [1] seems to be exactly what you’re describing — “local news in a box”:

> What is Patch? > > Patch is an innovative way to find out about, and participate in, what's going on near you.

My Connecticut hometown had a Patch site. As other commenters have pointed out, apps don’t address a dearth of local journalists (Patch appears to encourage community participation, which sounds good, but is not journalism), funding for local news (though I would expect it to reduce operating costs), etc.

Oh, neat! Thanks for sharing this.

This is a really good analysis – I thought the design was simple at first, but now even the cable-passing-cable version linked in the wikipedia page looks liable to jam as teeth pass in and out of the top channel.

For something like this to even have a chance, it would probably need many more, thinner teeth than these diagrams illustrate.

EDIT: @analogwintermut I think this addresses your question.

I agree with your sentiment. I found datatables initially easy to set up and use, but I soon found the documentation to be sorely lacking. Searches for the most basic customizations led to SO answers outlining ugly workarounds when all I really needed to know was the name of the right flag.

The examples on the site aren't general or plentiful enough, and they assume more prior knowledge of the plugin than would seem reasonable. I couldn't even find a list of initialization options anywhere.

A full list of options are available here: http://datatables.net/ref . However, I totally accept that the documentation isn't up to scratch, which I why I'm working on completely redoing it.

I'd be interested to know of any particular pain points you had so I can ensure they are addressed.

Not to create the lookup table in the example.

And I love reading about applications of linear algebra like this. Makes me want to write my own image processing algorithms as practice.
