There's a lot of buzz from folks who work there about Zuckerberg emphasizing flattening the hierarchy and making job cuts a routine part of operations i.e. much like say IBM or Cisco routinely trim in a way that most of their cuts don't make the news
Job cuts are already part of the culture. There are non-regretful attrition targets and the bottom 10-16% or so each year either need to improve or will get fired.
Cost controls at Meta are atleast 2 orders of magnitude less than any similar company. I've worked at a few FAANGS now and the controls are really low in every dimension.
I fear that when the finally start acting it will be a lot more severe due to the need to catch up.
Who are the independent thinkers at Meta that might be able to convince Mark Zuckerberg to change course in case he is wrong about the size or timing of the Metaverse?
I should just wander the country starting half-assed clones of popular apps for clueless non-tech companies. I'll bet the CTO of Wal-Mart's video app division is doing pretty well for himself, a lot better than I am as a FAANG code monkey..
Not for nothing, and I don't know if it has changed in the last years, but I remember that Walmart's tech division was packed with brains that could easily rival anything in SV. They were just focused on different things.
This article struck a chord with me. I am a middle aged immigrant in the tech industry battling loneliness since I was about 15. Outwardly I probably seem to be doing ok.
While I see a lot about the challenges to public health and society by the loneliness epidemic, I haven't been able to find much in the way of what lonely people can do do build community especially in the atheist / agnostic realm.
Over the course of reading the comments, I found a few resources that I've compiled, please pile on if you know of others
Meetups https://www.meetup.com
- I've tried several meetups but nothing has really stuck as in finding people who consistently come for an activity and the opportunity to connect more deeply
As I think about it for someone like myself I am looking for more "church without the religion" outlets than say activity groups like say hiking etc because i find the activity groups more focused on the activity than generally making friends that you can call on for any kind of emergency, real world problem
