It's debt for the same reason that when you keep borrowing money, things just pile up and you feel overwhelmed. While no one will repo my car for not following through on an idea, it also means that the things in my "want to do" list grows and it becomes apparent that I'm stressing myself over what to do, which to do, when to do, etc. It's the same as taking on too much monetary debt; you feel overwhelmed and your limited resource starts to spread thinner and thinner. Same with idea debt; your time (resource) is spread thinner and thinner.
My car came pre-loaded with Bose speakers and, quite honestly, they're the best speakers I've heard in any car I've driven. The sound is pretty good considering that my car's stereo system is actually better than what I have at home. I've never tried their headphones though, I'm not in the market though I'll probably end up going Alclair for custom, in-ear stuff (I play drums so it's nice to have in-ear monitors).
I'm not really into car audio, but I'd imagine this is one place where Bose probably does pretty well because everyone is forced to use the same tiny boxes.
My first prebuilt was a Gateway Intel Pentium II 400Mhz. It had a decent gaming card (AGP) and a Soundblaster sound card. Oh the days when I used to game on that PC. Then I got gutsy and built my own, haven't looked back since. I remember the Gateway sat on the wayside until I took it out and put in a Pentium III 400Mhz CPU on there, marginally faster than the Pentium II. I doubled the RAM, added a new HDD, and gave it away to a friend. It served my friend well.
This article hurts. I'm currently contracting with a large company and they said they were agile. The only agile thing about them is their cultic insistence on two week sprints and retros, other than that, the project rots from within. Case in point: team I work in takes care of all the web front end. One team needed some web work but then management came thundering down to us demanding that we finish another module because someone opened their mouth and over delivered, now it's time to save someone's hide.
Imagine having one team yell at you while management yells at you. Oh, and did I mention that management wanted 100% feature complete on a module that was 30% done? Genius.
After reading this, my liver was like "oh sh that hurts."
> demanding that we finish another module because someone opened their mouth and over delivered, now it's time to save someone's hide.
Question: Did you mean over-promised (vice over-delivered)? If the latter, could you please explain what you meant? Sorry if I'm missing the obvious; I'm not a dev.
It's a joy to use for side projects! I'm using it as the datastore in a web app for learning that automatically generates quiz questions from user-provided data. Integrating with it using the Python API has thus far been dead simple.
I'm 35 and I'm not at all complaining. Career wise, I've not only learned more technically but it seems like I'm learning better/faster these days than 10+ years ago. On a personal note, it's nice to know I'm established with a decent amount in my savings and retirement.
With friends, most of my friends are younger but it's nice to be able to partner with them and go through life shoulder to shoulder. It's nice to know that I have the means to be able to help people too, that alone gives me much satisfaction and contentment.
The nice thing is, 35 seems to be a starting point for me. I've got a long way to go and I'm re-evaluating my options. I used to think that getting older meant that I would regret not having accomplished the goals I had in my youth but now, I see it as refining my goals and I'm walking into things with far more experience and knowledge which means more than just "getting it done" but "getting it done, well."
"The nice thing is, 35 seems to be a starting point for me."
Nice. I'm 34, almost 35, and I feel the same way. I'm actually seriously thinking about starting a business now whereas in my twenties, I was more interested in leisure activities. Definitely seems like a much better time to start something than when I was younger.
Many places in Minnesota already offer gigabit fiber. What is strange is it is in many of the rural areas (see most of Northern Minnesota).. See Paul Bunyan Communications for instance.
Not only do we have stuff 1000x faster/cheaper than before, but 3D XPoint is backed by intel and micron, both have colluded for decades on how to develop faster, cheaper, durable storage.
What people want are results now. It took me a few tries to cook any fish well. Every once in a while I screw up and I chalk it to lessons learned.
The first time I made scallops I was nervous but I knew my gas range and I knew my tools, so it came out perfect (with butter though I should have made herbed butter). The first time I made buttermilk fried chicken using my sous vide they came out tender and seasoned, granted it didn't look all that pretty.
Cooking takes time. It takes practice. I think the novelty of these devices wear off once people realize that their steaks are perfectly medium rare but cheaped out or they don't know how to buy a good cut of meat. The novelty will go away when they practice cooking so much they rely less on technology and more on their own skill.
I'm a software engineer and I took a total of two cooking courses and with lots of practice, I became a better cook.
$1500 is essentially a weekend cooking class...twice. Learning to cook was by far the most challenging yet the most fun I've ever had. With the exception of the immersion circulator (I own a Polyscience one), none of these things really help. If you want to be a good cook, learn to cook. I never understood the need for "smart" devices when cooking is largely based on experience. Sure, this oven will help me cook medium rare steaks well, but will it taste good? I make medium rare steaks on a frying pan and I can make it consistently well. Cooking is practice, it doesn't require some expensive device.
Big market out there for kitchen gadgets. Most of which don't really help that mucb, but are flashy. A kitchen full of gadgets is more of a vanity thing than anything else.
I see no reason to not believe you. You should at least consider that others might differ. Those others might be a small niche big enough to be worth milions.
