But surely they can be isolated systems

They can be but they're not. Once you share a wire all bets are off.

By that logic there's no security on the internet at all. Everything "shares a wire" after all.

Security is about degrees and nuances. These kind of black & white statements are unhelpful and unrealistic.

> By that logic there's no security on the internet at all.

Have you /been/ on the internet, lately? ;)

Two systems that accept input from the same touchscreen can't be isolated in hardware. From the software side, any portion of each system's interface that overlaps at the touchscreen cannot be isolated. On top of that, if the touchscreen is reprogrammable, then it can be attacked directly and touchscreens are commodity devices not normally considered part of the security infrastructure.

I don't think anybody is upset that their climate control system is exposed to hackers. There are no accelerator/steering/braking controls on the touchscreen (I assume) so those could be isolated but it would require having to separate systems for critical and non-critical operations. The only reason not to do that is because it's more complicated which translates to more expensive.

The climate control isn't mechanically independent of the engine and other mechanical systems. Even in the primitive cars before digital contols, the heater is dependent on the engine's thermostat (well except for old Bugs and 911's, but then that heat never really worked). In modern cars, the AC may be connected to the engine control system so that power can be redeployed for fuel efficiency or for power in emergency situations or to keep emissions within specification.

"Climate control system" is an abstraction over belt driven moving parts.

Exactly

This is not really a platform. It's a consulting shop, with money to buy TC space

Well I guess they'll learn by their mistakes...

People collect old manuscripts and books. People donate old manuscripts and books. Not that surprising

There's a story here. Not implying anything special, no da Vinci code here.

It's correct. There were thousands of people who memorized the verses at the time of Muhammad(pbuh). Muslims recite the Quran at least 5 times a day in the daily prayers from memory. Even today there are millions of people in all age groups who've memorized the whole Quran in Arabic

All evidence points to the contrary. The need of Uthman to canonize the text was due to the variation that existed. He ordered those variants destroyed, removing all evidence of their content. I even recall from college that the caliph ordered all verses, in any form, to be collected; some of the verse was from scraps of vellum, reed, antler, etc... If thousands of memorizers truly existed, such an exercise wouldn't be needed. He would only need to get a dozen of the people that memorized it to recite the exact verse again.

Variations existed in the written form not in the recitation because diacritics (tashkeel) were not standardized. It's a common misconception that the Quran is memorized through the written text. This is not how it is transmitted. Look up Tajweed, which are the rules of pronunciation of the Quran.

Furthermore, memorizers of the Quran can trace the chain of narration back to Muhammad himself. So there couldn't be any forgery or manipulation. Uthman doesn't have the power to erase people's memories.

Since written word is far more reliable than oration, again there is absolutely no proof of any of this.

In Arabic language different dialects/variations have different punctuations and pronunciations which changes how a word is pronounced but not what the word is or what it means.

I understand this. Spouting random facts doesn't constitute a rebuttal.

What's the SQL for the second optimized tree?

It's the same. That's the point :). You need to plan your queries much differently when your data is not in a single node.

I don't think it's the same. The filters have to be done in separate queries on both the tables, and then the results the joined.

Muslim here. I do think the people who draw pictures of Muhammad do so fully knowing that it will offend Muslims. The only message they're trying to get across is "we don't like you".

Maybe I missed something, but how does the suitcase communicate with your services? Isn't it limited by bluetooth range?

It's not just Bluetooth. We will be publishing the details of our full tracking solution soon

It'll be interesting to know. You can't make calls from the plane to transmit location. You can however, do it when you detect the luggage has landed, based on altitude and/or airport coordinates.

That's correct. Stay tuned, we'll release technical details in a blog post soon. Thanks for the feedback
