I have been a user for years now, mostly just skimming through when I get the time. It's been extremely positive whenever I became engaged. I don't knock peoples attempts to money grab. You have to eat and there's money here. However, it makes me cringe nonetheless. What I'd really like to see more of (and maybe it's here and I miss it) is when people do share their startup or something, give the nitty gritty and try in all ways possible to make it beneficial to this community, through learning, some sort of engagement or pure giving stuff away. Give a little and HN will always deliver.

Thank you for clarifying this. I remember it like it was yesterday. Big tragedy. People forget and move on, sadly. A lot of people were upset though and still are. This has to be something to "never forget". It has to.

You could also try not calling us nerds. Thanks. FWIW I didn't open the link. Not really into getting preached to by someone that uses that sort of terminology to refer to professionals.

I've never heard of that before. Thanks!

It's a complicated situation to be in and I feel your pain. Been there done that! I don't think I've ever gotten a single job from sending in applications randomly using something like Indeed or Monster. Usually they were all through word of mouth. That being said, you should probably just keep trying. Besides encouraging you to keep going, here's some other advice which you can take or don't. Just trying to be helpful if I can!

1. Build up a portfolio of work, through hobby at first. Build some apps, release something, post it here and at the bottom of the post or on the README, or website, mention you're looking for work. It gives you exposure and experience and could lead to some interesting opportunities, but at the very least you're gaining some relevant knowledge. Try to work on things you love, but work with tools you're not familiar with (yet). Figure out some modern tech stacks, methodologies, practices, etc, and run it. You could even get started learning Web Development with C#. Come up with an idea such as what we discussed before, pick a solid framework, learn how to do proper testing (and implement full enough test coverage), pick a apidoc generator and write some really nice docs, pick up a framework like React and build a UI, etc.

2. Try to expand your networking. I've gotten three jobs by asking around to all my IRC friends, and one job through responding to a Hacker News thread. Join some relevant IRC channels, Discord communities, etc, and get to know people. Like I said, I've never had success just submitting resumes. Might need to be a bit more strategic and reach out to people personally, perhaps through LinkedIn.

Good advice. Building your own stuff, regardless of how silly/small the app is, showing it off and being PASSIONATE about it, come off very strong in an interview in my experience. And yes, networks never hurt anyone

I'm going to keep expanding for sure. My portfolio is fairly small. I wish I could share the stuff I make at work, but NDA's are pretty strict haha.

Thanks a ton! I've started my repo on github. I definitely want to add more projects to it.

Honestly, the networking thing will likely be the hardest part for me, I think.

In your experience, how are conventions for things like that? Ever met any good contacts?

I think comparing the squatters to Ammon Bundys family and supporters is completely ignorant. I'm not hoping to insult you but I do wish you would go and do a bit more research, my friend. I cannot agree with Ammon on several things but this is a grossly misguided comparison.

You're right. The Bundys are lawless domestic terrorists. These people don't sound like terrorists.

"Terrorist" has taken on a LOT of different meanings. What do you see as terroristic in Bundy's actions that is missing from the actions of these squatters?

It's an incredibly similar case...

It's shocking to me that you say this. What was their action that you claim to be an act of terrorism?

The armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is a pretty clear-cut example.

That isn't an example of domestic terrorism, though.

You might want to open up a dictionary and look up the definition of “terrorism” again.

Just doing something illegal with guns doesn’t quite qualify.

That's pretty neat!

It would be neat to be able to select the field from a dropdown or something and then insert a custom value. Do you have any plans for any other sort of functionality in the future? This has some potential to be really cool.

Thats good idea! I'd want to test for overflow, so I can limit the values, that way I dont break peoples games haha.

I can see that the project is very early in development but honestly this is great. I hope you use all the feedback here to improve it. You have a winner of an app, in my opinion!

Cheers! I really appreciate it Jesse

They removed Aaron Swartz? You've got to be kidding me.

Yep!
