Why you are still using it then? Operating systems are very complicated beasts, none is perfect but I like Linux the most. There are issues too but I feel like I have more control over it.. Sometimes work reasons force people into Mac/Windows though... :(
It means money is not everything. Yet for some reason people seem to think the most expensive stuff is the safest, nicest and the best one. Like they are buying trust or what..
We already lost control over HW and SW. There are often malicious functionalities in binary software and our 'hardware' can't be trusted either (Intel ME, AMD PSP, firmwares, bioses). Some time ago, firmware in a notebook used to install drivers into windows during boot without user knowing that. We are dependent on technology and we don't seem to care about security much, other than buying some magical binary blobs called Antivirus and Cleaners.
It's sad to see companies doing that (walled gardens, locked bootloaders). Unfortunatelly most normal people don't understand the differences. They buy the device like any other daily product and expect it "to just work". :( Lots of people don't even know about alternatives, as their software comes pre-installed. Big companies are more and more controlling users and it looks like they don't care?
I think that vitamin D defficiency may have contributed to start of my Multiple Sclerosis! I used to sit mostly inside all summer programming. So be careful.
They were times when people used to manage their servers and they had to be careful on how to use 'rm -rf' or 'dd' tools.
I find it funny how today there have to be red flags, warning signs and double confirmations everywhere. Are people less competent or are there simply lower requirements when hiring them?
That's exactly what I also hate. Sometimes mousing over a button makes the fan spining crazily. Websites are more and more cpu and ram-intensive unnecessarily.
They are making a kind of masterpiece to be presented on a gallery than websites useful for everyday use.
Also I have mixed feeling about the whole single page application era. They are impressive on one side and bloated and slow on the other. I liked more when web used to be content (text/image) sharing platform than apps. Browsers today are like operating systems on top of operating system. :( That's both good and terrible.
But for Android there is at least f-droid.org repository made of apps automatically compiled from the source code. I prefer using these apps. And the fact you can install what you want. In iOS you are locked into a censored AppStore and have to pay to get a certificate to run your own app.
There is also a small chance for someone to develop an Android phone with fully open software in the future. There is 0% chance to have an open iPhone.
Not 100% true. On iOS you can install your own apps from Xcode for free, you have to pay the $100/year developer fee to distribute it on the app store.
And seeing this I am wondering why people still trust closed-source software. My long term dream is using 100% free software on a HW with minimum binary blobs.
