So what if a conflict breaks out and the CCP essentially use TikTok as a pathway directly into the brains of millions of Americans. Let's say they tweak the algorithm with a button press to create confusion and public discord when we should be united to protect taiwan.

That's a possible tool of disinformation.

WHAT IF aliens invade and take over TikTok and then use it to convince hard-working Americans to dive into the mouths of the aliens?

It's a possible tool for aliens to make lunch.

One of those scenarios is much more likely than the other.

You (the US) should definitely make same laws banning aliens from owning social media before it's to late! Think about the children!!1!

hm, create a law which gives government emergency powers to delete apps / ban ip networks in case of a war

---

now that I think about it more banning foreign websites is the perfect way to brain wash

1. ban all foreign websites, because clearly it's a foreign influence on your people. "What if the war breaks" and so on

2. now you only have your local websites. Their owners are here and can be forced to mangle / edit content and bend it to your will. Where the foreign actor can ignore your requests local one can not

We already have it in Russia. People use the ugly and banned Facebook because they know that at least it's less censored in regards to Russian topics than locally owned VK or dzen. And Facebook is less likely to provide your messages to the russian police

Counterbalance to misinformation is, just, information. Strengthen the institutions that provide valuable and quality information and use them as counter. Why aren't PBS and such institutions funded to produce shorts that inform users and put those on Tiktok et all?

What if, by nature, any type of conspiracy information is much better at hitting dopamine centers and attracting viewers than the "real" news can ever be? What if PBS could never come close to what misinformation can do and who it can attract...

This is so fucking sad. As a russian american who lived through russian transition from relatively free country to an authoritarian one I'm getting dejavu vibes here(Putin started with taking over of all independent news sources like newspapers/tv and radio channels etc). This is not up to the government or some other people to decide what I read, what I watch where I get my information/news from. America has a beautiful concept of free speech, stick to it. I personally think that TikTok is a brain rot, but I still don't want any government involvement into this. Don't like it? - Don't use it.

Totally agree with this.

When did they say you can't read or watch? The same video producers on Tiktok can move to the multitude of platforms that are allowed. They can produce the exact same stuff.

The ban has nothing to do with the material, it has to do with the platform that is used to distribute and curate it. CCP by controlling the algorithm would allow it to do exactly what you say, at the push of a button.

Your comparison to Putin's Russia falls very short.

Marginal cost added probably isn't that much. How many manhours does a mac take to build?

Yeah it's such a sacrifice. Many of the acts come on at 1am earliest, but usually 3am. That's getting home before 6 if you're lucky and then the whole next day is wasted.

It's probably what you've said. I think perception changes, all the different venues and different types of music were once exciting. Then your brain forms the patterns and isn't as excited by x,y and maybe only z elicits a reaction.

Then you become more and more a morning person, so in the evening you aren't even that hyped up and your brain is already trying to call it a night.

For me something like standard 4x4 techno has become so formulaic that it doesnt interest me as much

I'm not sure if stuff changed or maybe i'm just older. A lot of those parties seemed so mysterious and exciting a couple years back for me. Now it seems like the same old stuff month in and month out. Most DJs kind of have their shtick, and there's also this kind of standard left field rave sound that a lot have seemed to adopt. Kind of like the Resolute roster.

it's also very hard for me to rationalize staying up until the main act comes on at 3-5am, getting home at 6am minimum. You waste most or all of the next day.

The less schtick the better! Take me out to a Club Night Club show at Sugar Hill Supper Club, or a Soul Summit daytime party, or some footwork DJ playing on a folding table in the back of a restaurant, or Randomer firing off banging techno at Nowadays until the wee hours.

Miss me with the DJs wearing masks, the choreographed light shows, the bottle service, the $200 admission. Look at the schtick-lessness of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=608rs5kB9ns

Man sugar hill is such a good spot. I only went there one time for Marcel Dettmann and Patrick Russell but it was sick.

Maybe i need to go to those different outdoor ones

Tons of people just go and imbibe in various things and just sway to the music or the beat. It really is a blank slate to make it what you want, and i think that's why its popular - many types of people all go to them for many different reasons.

This is it. The phone scrolling has become so addicting that people just go on their phones. And audio quality. You can enjoy the music sometimes at better quality in your own home and scrolling all the same.

Why are poor people who own a car and can pay for parking driving into Manhattan often? Does your premise even make sense?

Because they have a job, dummy. Are you for real?

Subways are not safe and it is terrible to go by subway when you can travel with car everywhere.

If you make $120k in NYC supporting a family of 3 (husband, wife, 1 kid), you are left with almost $1k with extremely tight budget. Now, $9 a day will cost you (22 days * 9 * 11 month) = $2,198.

Not everyone values time. Poor people, lower middle class and middle class need money and food on the table and not additional expense out of pocket for comfort of upper middle class and rich people.

Upper middle class and rich people value time because that is the only thing they can optimize. Money is imaginary and can't do better beyond certain level (think $2 MM Net worth).

America NYC is now so arrogant that it is making roads exclusive for people who make lots of money (>$150k).

Subways are very safe, you obviously don't live or have spent much time in NYC. Millions of people ride them daily. Office workers making $$$, teens, everybody.

Driving is likely less safe. And you still didn't tell me why somebody is driving into Manhattan below 60th st, 5 times a week. To commute? What type of job would it be?

A woman was set on fire by illegal alien. What are you talking about Subway being safe? Obviously you do not care because woman was not from Privilege race aka White. There have been hundreds of deaths for no reason where people were pushed on the Subway. I don't (and won't) post gore but look it up. It is horrifying.

You are the one who do not live or travel within NYC.

Why go below 60th? Because they want to be in the office or have some work to do? Why there are millions of parking

What does free transit do? People need to earn some money and then use that money. It's a healthy psyche. $3 for a ride anywhere in the city is pretty cheap

Figuring out how, and how much, to pay, and then fumbling with cash and change or whatever, during the fairly stressful experience of boarding, is something of a barrier to using transit. So removing the fare payment entirely removes that barrier. But, that's gotten a lot easier with support for paying fares in apps, so I think it's a lot less of an issue now than it was ten years ago. I used to be in favor of free fares, mostly because it'd make using transit less intimidating for newbies. But I'm on the fence now.

As you say, it has gotten a lot easier, and nyc is the easiest out of the systems I've used recently. You tap your phone, any credit card or a card you get with cash (replacement for metrocard), and the gate opens while they take your money. 12 taps and you're not charged anymore for the week.

Look at Japan as a homogenous and extremely (if not the most) high trust society.

>Look at Japan as a homogenous and extremely (if not the most) high trust society.

Why does Japan need separate trains for women, and why can the shutter sound on Japanese phones not be turned off?

All countries need this; Japan's just the only one that did something about it. I'm sure NYC ladies would love segregated cars right about now.

Um... why exactly am I looking for a highly homogenous society?

I'm just saying they tend to be more high trust, which is supported by statistical data.
