One part that piqued my interest was Carmack's interest in using functional languages. Of course he goes on to say that it would be hard with people making the switch and all that after.
“It's not because people are no good. The very best programmers always make mistakes. This is something that I've really internalized; that, no matter how good you think you are, you are making mistakes all the time, and you have to have structures around you to try and help you limit the damage that your mistakes will cause, find them as early as possible, so that you can correct them, and the earliest possible time is at compile time. So I'm all about trying to be much more restrictive on what we can do, here. And on the one hand, I would entertain programming in—I'm very tempted to want to move to—a functional programming language; start programming in Haskell or OCaml or something, but that's not a credible thing to do in the game industry.”
Cheating through item drop mining with multiple accounts can't be done without paying for some in-game store item that makes the account a premium one, since free accounts can only be on the recieving end of a trade and have item restrictions (eg no hats).
If you mean the much more serious VAC-evasion by creating new accounts, they mentioned they would be cracking down on those, but no so sure about the specifics.
My winter break is only about a month before I begin another semester of uni. I will try to do as much of the following as possible:
- start going through SICP
- learn python+django
- read up on some of next semester's courses
Both TC and HN are interested in tech startups so I wouldn't be surprised if there were just people who submit on sight as they pop up on their rss feeds because of the karma on offer.
Maybe I'm understanding it wrong, but can't you just middle click and move your mouse higher/lower than the marker makes it move constantly in that direction?
So basically this is Apple Store fun. Try:
Open terminal, open screen,
sleep 3000; while true; say "hilarious thing you want the Mac to say"; done
Close terminal.
