While i didnt vote for red this year (independent) I totally agree and the sudden labeling of certain tweets is egregious towards free speech.
There is so much fake stuff on the Internet and tech companies suddenly labeling tweets of the president, but not others is disgusting and goes against free speech. No labeling is needed.. speech that doesn't cause physical harm should not be labeled!
Im speaking as a proponent of free speech only as I could not vote for that person and do not believe much of any political mumbo jumbo (to me it's two billionaires using their resources to do whatever and make up whatever to win).
Yes, but if your labeling one viewpoint and not another then your stifling free speech/free thought ... you no longer are a neutral platform. Idiotic for them to go down such road as labeling only further riles up that persons base.
For many of the kinds of things that get labeled, I'm having some trouble figuring out how you would label both viewpoints.
If X says that the Pfizer and Moderna COVID vaccines are made using aborted fetal tissue and Y says that they are not, and I want to label X as false, what label should I put on Y to label the other viewpoint?
Isnt it opinion like any other then? Just from someone with better platform. You dont need to be general arbiter of truth ro be like "wait, election law is actually different".
You’re misrepresenting what’s being labeled. Trump doesn’t get labeled for stating his opinions or policies, he gets labeled for lying. If Biden starts flagrantly tweeting malicious lies he’ll get labeled, too. The difference is that the modern Republican Party is a couple decades into using their own propaganda supply it's easy to feel like their side is being singled out because the distribution of lying and threats of violence is so heavily skewed.
Who are the two billionaires? I had thought you were talking about the recent Presidential election in the US, but Biden is nowhere near a billionaire.
Almost all of his wealth came from his salary as a Senator (1973 until he became VP) and then his salary for 8 years as VP, plus Social Security starting in 2009 and also pensions. His net worth at the end of that was under half a million.
He's boosted that to somewhere in the $10-20 million range since leaving office, mostly from book deals for him and his wife ($8 million), speaking fees (basic fee is $100k, but it has ranged from $8k to $190k), and a professorship at the University of Pennsylvania's Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement ($540k).
Is the democratic and republican parties not two billionaire or more machines? So, pardon I should have been more clear.
If you choose to believe what your side tells is truth that's fine. I just have a different view and if i have money and want power i am going to use it either solo(ly) or collectively to get what I want. Look at what Peter Thiel did with his money cause of the axe he had to grind with Gawker. He paid for Hulk Hogan's legal defense to annihilate Gawker. I'm sure other money/power bags do similarly and lots in politics. So and for me that is why I believe all politics is mumbo jumbo spun up by billionaires to win; whatever it takes!
Why? Are people with deep technical knowledge, both soft and hard, not allowed to profit from that knowledge? Can you point to some conflict of interest in writing a book, speaking, and being a professor while a private citizen? Are you just against capitalism?
The man spent his entire adult life in service to this country and never profited from it while in the act of that service, which you can't say for many of his colleagues.
This, I think, is such an important point. We hold too many powerful people in our society less accountable then those with less power. We should be striving to achieve the opposite, the more powerful you are, the more accountable you are, the harsher the penalty is for abusing that power.
If I say something inflammatory on HN, it will get flagged, downvoted, potentially result in a temporary or permanent ban, but if the POTUS says something inflammatory on Twitter, we're all just supposed to let it go? It makes no sense, I am, in the grand scheme of things a nobody, and the POTUS, no matter who occupies that position, is one of, if not the, most powerful person(s) in the world. The current occupant is currently screaming "RIGGED ELECTION" on Twitter, and they're not supposed to put some context, note that it is false?
Yes, match.com has been sued by the FTC for all their fake crap and still they are doing it, especially when your profile is about to expire. A few days from that date you will all the sudden get attractive women that never bothered with you previously. These are fake accounts to get you to re-up your membership and again/even after being sued by the FTC are pulling this crap!
Yup. Nearly 20 years ago one of my friends was paid to create profiles on a dating site, and then even to respond a couple of times before ghosting people.
Facebook has been doing that to me for years. It’s tough with women because I sometimes click the bait when I think it might be someone I know who got married.
My former best friend of 30 years turned into a greedy, vengeful, ego-driven criminal and after 15 years of keeping me away from his gambling (addiction) world (friends) he got me involved.
I am not an innocent party as I agreed to do something that I knew was wrong and stupid. Even kept saying such to him and everyone while we did such. When the stuff hit the fan he threw me under the bus to save himself from the cops. We tried to patch things up a few months later by continuing to run our outdoor recreation business, but the only day we were in business that season he stole portions of the profit.
When this all happened I was harsh and judged him.. saying i didnt even know him anymore and he's turned into a criminal. Thus, he won't ever speak with me again as I judged him (lol). The guy started doing some illegal scary stuff and as a friend I was pointing out he's going in the wrong and a very bad direction. Doesn't matter we will never speak again and I know the only way we will is for me to forgive him and reach out. But no he's become a criminal and ego/being revengeful/greed/being right yet he's so wrong is more important then 3 decades of friendship.
People change... him changing and the loss of our friendship hasnt been easy.
Excuse the cultural reference, but the outdoor recreation thing makes me think of a plot line from The Sopranos where an addicted gambler gets "busted out" by the mafia and ends up being force to do illegal things because of his debts.
Maybe it was the gambling addiction that lead your friend to doing illegal activities? Addictions like that can cause people to go out of control, it's a compulsion and a very sad one.
Yes and so am I supposed to give him a pass? He's going to keep going in the wrong direction until his addiction and it's action lands him in jail or something bad to teach him a lesson. Not sure I can teach him that lesson myself minus cutting him out of my life and all my family's life (he grew up around my family).
Also, when you put out he's doing wrong and going in a horrible direction he says i am horrible for judging him. He already almost got thrown in jail once, yet didnt get time. Maybe time in jail is what he needs to wake himself up from his addiction. Unfortunately, both his parents died early due to drug addiction.
Hard to forgive and reach out when all i can see is he will do the same until he works on quitting his addiction.
What would others do?
*im here in the mid-Atlantic area of the US. Didnt watch the Sopranos that much, but on a different note running that business with him was the best job I ever had. Customers loved what we offered and not only paid us but would write reviews on Facebook without asking. As well I was selling a service I loved and working with friends outside. It could definitely could have become a 100k summer business and more, but he ran the business like a Soprano and I ran it like Walt Disney. The latter is still blossoming decades later ... mob bosses not so much.
If you are not str8 and not out about your proclivities Facebook, Google, ATT, etc will out you indirectly (your friend, parent or partner needs to be smart though).
Example you have a bi or gay app on your phone.. you visit such websites, etc ... Facebook, Google, etc will start showing you ads geared towards things bi or gay people like. Now say you share your phone or your TV service with someone who doesn't know your proclivities and they are smart ... they will see the ads your being served are a lot of ads geared towards bi or gay people. Though on their phone and on their TV service they aren't seeing such ads. YouTube TV and ATT TV Now are the worst ... watching TV with your family members or partner or whoever and bam they are running such ads and all in the room watching too can see.
Im open about my proclivities, but many are not and FB, Google, etc have no business invading users' privacy & potentially ruining user's lives for their piggy bank. You will see old guys on Facebook complaining .. why am I seeing this disgusting ad ... ummm, the guy is looking at gay and bi content that is why, yet never came to terms with it nor ever could. Though that's his business and these companies have no right to invade our privacy like this!
Somehow Facebook managed to do to this to me despite having no FB-owned apps on my phone, using Firefox with the Facebook Container addon, and not having exposed that information on Facebook directly or through group membership or search history.
Unless they're reading my facebook messenger messages, I have no clue how they would have discerned that piece of information.
> Unless they're reading my facebook messenger messages, I have no clue how they would have discerned that piece of information.
Facebook Messenger is not end to end encrypted, unlike WhatsApp (which is, but shares metadata with Facebook). Of course it’s reading your messenger messages as much as it’s reading posts on Facebook to see what the content is about and how to use it to build a better profile of you to show you and your contacts more “relevant ads”.
Consider Facebook Messenger like a private closed group on Facebook. Just the interface and conversation models are different.
I agree 100% ... i use DDG everyday yet Im just using Bing and the reality is Bing is no Google. Google's results are hands down the best on the web and thats without being signed into Google.
DDG has so much momentum behind it now I dont understand why they dont do all they can to create a search engine all their own(bulk up search engineers.. bulk up on venture funding...make acquisition that improve its search, etc). One that is as good or better then Google. I so want to be able to keep recommending it yet not have to hear friends/family say its not as good as Google.
As a UI/UX Designer I design with this audience in mind.
Though working with one is a bit annoying. Hey let’s design it this way it’s simpler umm no I don’t know how to code it that new way let’s do it the way I know. Sigh.
Design is easy... keep it simple... place stuff where it always is.. use modern fonts(one for headers text and other for paragraphs).. proper spacing ... .. color contrasting colors and one color that is opposite of all others used to highlight x. Also find another designers work you love and use it as a template/for inspiration.
I love designing and especially in code. I don’t understand what’s the point of wireframe designers yet I have been rejected by numerous interviews/jobs for being a design coder vs. a wireframe Designer.
Most of the time easy thing is not that easy. It needs proper understanding on user, context, demography etc. Most of the code generating tools creates junk and useless code with random ids which are hard for developers to integrate with logic, he has to change it to make it more semantic. Hence, companies look for specific people when they have a team of html designers separately.
It’s faster to draw a box then to code one. When still getting buy in from the team and testing your ideas with users, the ability to iterate quickly counts
Try Framer [1]. You're still designing in code, but using a tool that "wireframe" designers can more easily understand and appreciate. Might help with the interviews. :)
I use the Face app to enhance my face/dating profile pics especially the goatee which changes your skin tone and adds a furrier goatee. It’s not a huge tweak to how I look so those who I go on dates or hook up with haven’t said anything and our subsequent dates or hook ups continued.
Overall the Internet is and slowly becoming less of a trustworthy source for much of anything. Thus dating apps that force u to take a pic of yourself thru the app no outside pics is probably going to become a thing.
Not really. You just don't have enough integrity to roll with your actual look. I wouldn't be so quick to blame that on anything but yourself.
In fact, it's in your best interest to be as honest as you can upfront so a woman's first impression of you isn't "hmm, he looked better in his photos :/"
>You just don't have enough integrity to roll with your actual look.
Everyone I know touches up their dating pics somehow. Let's not even get into how your statement relates to makeup, I'm talking about actual modifications to the picture through filters or even straight-up photoshop.
So what? I'm not talking about women and make-up. But I'd say the same about a man wearing foundation to round out his blemishes.
The truth is you're really doctoring your images to satisfy your weak ego. And the sooner you acknowledge that, the healthier.
Trying to rope in other people with "but others do it" only demonstrates even weaker integrity. Though I guarantee you're overestimating the number of touch ups using something like Face App. Not really the same as some 80s VHS Instagram filter or whatever.
>The truth is you're really doctoring your images to satisfy your weak ego.
I don't think this is true if everyone is doing it. It's like an arms race, you have to do it just to reach a baseline, as opposed to doing it to stand out.
Something similar that occurs in online dating is that guys add 1-2 inches to their height. The vast majority of men do this. I'm somewhere between 5'10 and 5'11, and most people my height list themselves as 6'+, so I started doing it too, and there's been a noticeable difference in the number of matches I get.
If I put my actual height, women will assume I'm under 5'9, because every guy who is 5'8 is listing themselves as 5'10.
You can claim that I'm being "insecure", but I've never been dishonest about my actual height in person. I used to just round down and put 5'10 because I really didn't care, and I'd always get remarks about how I was taller than they expected. Funnily enough, lots of people who are the same height as me really do believe they are 6' because this exaggeration has become so common, and the average adult doesn't measure their height properly and just goes off what everyone else says.
no im using it to get laid and live life silly because its all about how you look until it isnt and then your old and no one is looking at you. MIght as well do what you can to enjoy the time you have here and sow your wild oats.
If you're a woman you can get a vaccine. Other than that there's no way to reasonably avoid it besides abstinence. If you've had more than one sexual partner then chances are you already have it.
> Though I guarantee you're overestimating the number of touch ups
Is this really your experience? Because that would be surprising. I see the damn snapchat eye enlargement on pretty much every second female dating profile photo nowadays.
I don't see how an app that showed less attractive people could be more successful. Dating is inherently going to be "buyer beware" from now on, not that it hasn't that way for a long time.
Well with all things on the Internet and as time continues to school not only us techies but all INternet users that most of what you see is fake that's going to be a need for veracity. Those who are already good looking to hot might flock to a dating app that ensures the pics they see for prospects are indeed real.
Overall a system needs to be created to ensure veracity on the Internet or it's just going to become a joke.. unbelievable!
Who runs such a system? What is their motive or mandate for doing so? Which governments will directly or indirectly control it? How will it deal with things that are unpopular yet true? How will it be gamed by malicious actors?
There is so much fake stuff on the Internet and tech companies suddenly labeling tweets of the president, but not others is disgusting and goes against free speech. No labeling is needed.. speech that doesn't cause physical harm should not be labeled!
