Shortwave propagates better and also its just a one time pad being distributed so embedding doesn't matter as much as long as the one time pad is longer than the intended message to send. There is no way to decrypt it because once you encrypt a message using a one time pad it is impossible to decrypt without the exact one time pad that it was encrypted with.

One time pads work only if only the sender and receiver have a copy of the pad - and they destroy each sheet on use. Distributing the pads is hard, but often it can be done easier than the message.

Distributing a one time pad like this is a stupid idea: it isn't hard to collect everything you ever send, and it takes a computer a few ms to check every encrypted message against every possible sequence. That is breaking a distribute one time pad via shortwave like this is something a single layperson can do, it doesn't even need a government scale attacker to break it.

Don't get me wrong, this can be used for good encryption. However it isn't a one time pad they are doing, it is something more complex.


Every message is equally likely when you attempt this kind of brute-force decryption with a one-time pad. The code you get is actually 100% unbreakable if the pad isn't intercepted.

I think there's some confusion in this thread. GGP talks about distributing the one time pad via the numbers station. GP (rightly) says that's a stupid idea.

The numbers station should be transmitting a message encoded with a one time pad. The one time pad itself should be physically given in person to the spies who you want to communicate with.


Or, if one is uncertain whether to trust the courier between you and your spy - one can send two different one time pads by two different couriers. If the spy is trained to xor those pads together before using, an enemy must intercept both pads to be able to read your messages.

There are many variants on this, including pads which you hope your enemy will intercept.


It's not a one-time pad being distributed, because leaking the pad leaks all your communications. It's almost certainly the actual messages being distributed, at specific times of day. The listener records the numbers for the known time period to get the message, then decodes it with their pad for that period. Then they destroy that pad. Continually broadcasting numbers makes it impossible to tell the length of the messages.

And it is faster than the internet. That's why high speed traders are starting to use HF.

Are we truly arguing semantics on HN which is a news aggregator for startups and everyone truly knows what a "raise" is and it is obviously not funds in your bank account? I don't disagree with the rest of your comment and the core thesis is valid that OpenAI is very much doing circular financing.

Edit: A raise comes with stipulations on what you can use the money for. I don't know if I was being too mean about responding to a parent but before you comment just google what a raise has..

It's a different definition of the word for one thing, and anyway, unless their compensation is prepaid this would only suggest that "raise" doesn't mean liquid money in an account, because an employee's raise is a promise to pay an amount over the remainder of the year with the stipulation the employee continues at the job.

Not even sure if AI was ever "human-centered" . DARPA funded a large amount of AI reseearch from even the 1960s. The DART tool used in the Gulf War made back all of their previous investments. [1]

Alright AI above was more like DARPA funded research programs that resulted in algorithms that allowed for the logistics program to be implemented where the department of war (aka Department of Defense at the time) to have the first gulf war be more efficient to the point that they did more than break even on the grants they gave out.

I think the future of having lean as a tool is mathematicians using this or similar software and have it create a corresponding lean code. [1] This is an LLM that outputs Lean code given a mathematical paper. It can also reason within lean projects and enhance or fix lean code.

Every 20 years, Jupiter and Saturn are in position for a gravity assist, which allows you to reach half the outer solar system. In the 1970s, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were all in the right half.

I read the book but don't recall any correlation to the topic of solar system alignment. Spoiler: Era 3 in the novel does speak of space exploration but this is all before the launches of Voyager (though Sputnik had launched by the books release IIRC).

The same that support Linux and yet Valve has to come up with Proton.

Developers chase the user base. If and when the users choose Linux developers will target Linux.

Proton as a project let's valve hedge on the heir apparent OS without upfront developer cost. If the Linux player base grows, developers will follow and valve is poised to remain dominant.


Because of Oracle v Google, supporting applications running in the Win32 userspace isn't necessarily leaving yourself open to threats of Microsoft meddling.

There's tons and tons of older software that people still want to run that might never be ported to Linux. And that's fine, because there's no problem with building compatibility layers to make it work. Microsoft can't do anything about that.

I believe they have proved that very few games are actually Windows games. The few remaining are mostly those which require Windows kernel drivers to run or connect to online services.

Hmm, citation needed on that one imo. Consensus is that their hardware strategy is in service of selling more games. Hardware revenues for Steam Deck are proportionally tiny; Frame and Machine aren’t going to meaningfully change that.

Honestly, HN is a great customer support forum considering so many posts actually get treated better than just using the standard customer support (many startups and other companies paying attention to it helps a bunch). It has to have more merit some of the time (this is not to say it is an assessment of what you are saying at all.
